Bridging the sweet spot between Bee Gees and Khruangbin, Bristol-based underground soul quintet Cousin Kula release summer-ready new single ‘Hanging On Your Lips’. The sultry falsetto, joyfully buttery chords and bouncing synth yells “FEEL GOOD HIT OF THE SUMMER!”, ripe for soundtracking hazy days in parks, gardens and balconies all over.
Formed of singer Elliot Ellison, keyboardist Will Wells, Douglas Cave on synths and sax, guitarist Jordan Woollgar and drummer Joe Milkinson; they met as highly active members of Bristol’s progressive jazz scene. Bonding over a shared love for an eclectic range of music from pop and psych through to prog, disco and Afrobeat, the six members soon found themselves living together, creating a rehearsal room in their basement. They became one of the tightest and most impressive bands on the Bristol circuit: noted in NME that “sometimes you can tell from the first listen that there’s a spark behind a band”. Their debut double EP ‘OODLES/STROODLES’ and limited ‘Cousin Kula Cassette’ preceded their critically acclaimed 2021 debut album ‘Double Dinners’ (“A gripping, enthralling selection” Clash). Radio support has come from BBC 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Tom Ravenscroft; Sian Eleri on BBC Radio 1, and Mafalda, Moxie and the Early Bird show on NTS.
With a Guardian Ones To Watch feature highlighting their “dreamy, doused-in-syrup psych-soul”, the band's sound has developed through shows at We Out Here festival, Gala’s mainstage and a tour supporting Mildlife across the UK. Returning on Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section International, ‘Hanging On Your Lips’ is the first indication of the band working on a new long player for the label.
